Prague Castle

Our day in Prague began with a tour of the city with a local guide.  First was Prague Castle which is the historical center of the Czech lands having been established in the late 9th century by Prince Borivoj as the seat of the Premyslid dynasty. It later became the capital of the Holy Roman Empire.  It was rebuilt in the 16th century becoming the Renaissance structure seen today.  It is now used by the President of the Czech Republic and his flag flies over the castle when he is there.  The Guinness Book of World Records lists it as the largest coherent castle complex in the world.

There are three courtyards within the walls of the palace with two guards at the first entrance.


The Matthias Gate connects the small first courtyard to the second courtyard.


Within this courtyard, we saw the Chapel of the Holy Cross and various other buildings:
